A PERSONAL NOTE
From Dr Gkonis, to you
Two short notes: one for students building their academic confidence, and one for parents seeking support that is expert, steady, and personal.
FOR STUDENTS
From Understanding to Independence
Welcome. I am Dr Nikolas Gkonis, and before we speak about marks, exams, coursework, interviews, or deadlines, I want you to know one thing:
Good tutoring is not about collecting answers.
It is about learning how to think.
Since 1995, I have taught more than 2,000 students, in person and online, from over 25 IB schools and across several academic systems, including IB, AP, GCSE, A Level, SAT Subject Tests, and national curricula. I have also prepared students for medicine and life-sciences entry routes, including UCAT, IMAT, HUMAT, MCAT, GAMSAT, former BMAT pathways, and other university-specific examinations.
That range matters because students rarely need only one kind of help. Some need to rebuild confidence. Some are aiming for the highest marks. Some need structure, discipline, or a clearer way to study. Others are working on IB sciences, an Internal Assessment, an Extended Essay, a research project, a journal article, a medical-entry pathway, an interview, or a thesis.
Over the years, I have supported students across school, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral work, in fields ranging from biology, pharmacology, dentistry, sports science, molecular biology, genetics, psychology, and environmental management to forensics, criminology, climate, earth sciences, and medical studies.
Wherever you begin, the aim is not simply to finish the next task. The aim is to understand what you are doing, why it matters, and how to approach academic work with more clarity, precision, and independence.
My work is highly personal and responsive. I do not guide students from a detached timetable. When a student is entering an exam, preparing for an interview, facing a deadline, or needing reassurance after an important moment, I remain closely present. I shape my daily routine around the real needs of my students, especially when pressure is highest.
My role is to explain what is difficult, identify what is unclear, challenge you when needed, and help you build the habits that make strong academic work possible: patience, accuracy, curiosity, discipline, and confidence.
Whether we are preparing for an exam, improving a piece of writing, shaping a research question, building a thesis, or preparing for an interview, the work always returns to the same foundation: real understanding.
Not only better marks.
A stronger academic mind. A steadier confidence.
